How hard is it for members of privileged groups to recognize that their opinions are not helpful in certain conversations?

As a person with a certain form or forms of privilege, chances are high that the members of whatever group you have privilege over already know what you know about that form of oppression. They’ve heard it time and time again from people who, like you, lack both personal and academic knowledge of the subject. You aren’t actually adding anything to the discourse.

I have a right to my own as well, and mine might just be that your opinion is unhelpful, worthless, counterproductive, and flat out wrong. You should probably recognize that your opinion is not always wanted and that you don’t need to give an opinion just for shits and giggles. You can go on all day about your favorite pokemon, favorite book, or favorite show.

I doubt you’re up in medical discussion boards or legal advice sites giving your opinion just because you can. You recognize that it’s worthless and it won’t help anyone. In this case, however, you’re being paternalistic and (because of your entitlement) think that what you’re doing might even be doing people a favor.
